Dreaming of turquoise water, white sand beaches, and unlimited tacos - but not the hefty price tag? We just got back from an incredible trip to Cancun, and the best part… we saved a TON of money without cutting corners on the experience.

If you’ve been putting off a tropical getaway because of the cost, here are some of our favorite tips to make it happen for less.

1. Fly for (Almost) Free with Points
One of our biggest wins? Flights that cost us next to nothing.
We used points from our Southwest Airlines account - earned through everyday spending on our Southwest Airlines American Express Card - to book our flights.
Why this works:
Points add up fast when you use your card for regular purchases
No blackout dates (huge bonus!)
Southwest allows free checked bags, saving even more
Pro tip: Start using a travel rewards card now - even if your trip is months away. You’ll be surprised how quickly points accumulate.
2. Save on Airport Parking (and Earn Rewards While You Walk!)
Airport parking can sneakily add a big expense to your trip - but we found an easy way to cut that cost.
Instead of parking in the airport garage, we chose the extended stay lot. It was significantly cheaper and honestly, the extra walking distance wasn’t a big deal.
In fact, it turned into a bonus!
We used the extra steps to earn rewards on the Winwalk app, where you can earn points just for walking and redeem them for gift cards.
Why this works:
Lower daily parking rate
Extra steps = extra rewards
A little movement before a long flight never hurts
Pro tip: Compare parking options ahead of time - those savings can easily cover a meal (or two) on your trip!
3. Choose an All-Inclusive Resort on Your Cancun Vacation (It’s Worth It!)
At first glance, all-inclusive resorts can seem pricey—but they can actually be one of the BEST ways to control your vacation budget.
We stayed at an all-inclusive in Cancun that covered:
All meals
Drinks (yes, even the fun ones)
AND even some excursions
That meant no surprise expenses or constantly pulling out our wallet (except to tip).
Why this saved us money:
No need to budget separately for food or activities
Easy to plan ahead - everything is paid upfront
Complimentary excursions = built-in adventures without extra fees
Pro tip: Look for resorts that include activities like snorkeling, kayaking, or guided tours - these can easily cost hundreds if booked separately!
4. Avoid the “Nickel and Dime” Trap
Travel costs can sneak up on you FAST. Think:
Resort fees
Food and drinks
Transportation
Activities
By bundling everything into one price, we avoided those constant little charges that add up quickly.
5. Be Smart About Extras
Even in a budget-friendly trip, it’s easy to overspend on:
Souvenirs
Spa upgrades
Off-resort excursions
We set a small “extras” budget - and stuck to it. That way we could still enjoy a few splurges without blowing our savings.
6. Focus on Experiences, Not Upgrades
It’s tempting to upgrade everything—but honestly, the best parts of Cancun are FREE:
Walking the beach at sunrise
Swimming in the ocean
Relaxing poolside
Watching the sunset
Those are the moments you’ll remember - not whether your room had a slightly better view.
This trip to Cancun proved that you don’t need a luxury budget to have a luxury-feeling vacation.
